Dear Friends,

Red River Valley Dulcimer Club will meet on Saturday May 16, 2015 but NOT at First Baptist Church in Durant.  We WILL meet at Loy Lake Park, 111 RC Vaughn Rd. Denison, TX, for Frontier Days at 9 am until around noon.  Please wear your 1800’s dress for this event. (We were scheduled to play here in April but because of weather and the condition of the grounds it was canceled.)

We will then travel to Pecan Grove Park West in Sherman TX.  Address is 3200 Canyon Creek Drive off FM 1417.  This event is sponsored by Guardian Hospice.  They will be releasing butterflies in memory and celebration of those who have passed.  We will need to meet no later than 1 PM.  We will be playing from 1:30 – 2 PM and then again at about 2:30 PM during the release of the butterflies.  In order to have a unified look, this will be a red shirt event.  Those dressed in 1800 clothing will be able to change in the restrooms in the Frontier Village Museum prior to going to Pecan Grove.  If that is not convenient there are restrooms at Pecan Grove Park.  Please bring your own chairs for both events.

David Lindsey, Ron Bowers, Jerry Wheeler, Fred Williams and Clyde Siddens spent the day two weeks ago bulldozing, digging ditches, laying wire and setting the electrical outlets for the 8 new campsites we are adding.  There is more to be done, but these guys were worker bees!!!!  We got a break in the rain and they decided it was time to get to work.  As time gets near we will have more things to be working on and we will set work days.  Winter Creek Reunion is not that far off!!  October 8th will be here before we know it!

This year we are going to have much improved workshop areas in the event of inclement weather.   So come on out to the festival and see our new improvements!

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for our own Julie Anderson and Jan Hicks Carroll for winning first place in the Ensemble competion last week at the Ozark Folk Center in Mt View, Arkansas.  They have been playing as a duo for a while now and have been on our WCR stage many times.  Both live in Oklahoma and are very generous with their musical talent at festivals, events, Veterans Homes and at church.  Both of these ladies will be at WCR, Julie manning our performers’ booth and Jan assisting her when she can, so be sure to stop by and offer them your congratulations and good wishes.

Red River Valley Dulcimer Club will have a busy day on May 2nd.  At 9 am till noon they will play for the opening of the Denison Farmers Market at 400 W Chestnut St in Denison.  This is a Red Shirt Event and we have participated in this for several years.  Need to arrive about 8:30 am to set up and be ready to play at 9 am.

We will all go to eat some lunch (dutch treat) for a break and fellowship.

Then at 1 pm we will meet at the museum at Grayson County Frontier Village for our jam and practice session.  We will probably jam outside unless the weather is inclement, then we jam in the community room.  This extra practice/jam time has been very successful in helping us to sound better and more musical.  This month we are going to experiment with some amplifiers to see if we want to use them in future plays.  If you have an amplifier bring it so we can look at several different options.  Location for this jam/practice is Frontier Village, Loy Lake, Exit 67 on Hwy 75, 111 R C Vaughn Rd, Dennison, TX 75020

Also on Saturday May 2nd Oakdale Park will be holding the park’s 90th birthday celebration.  They have invited any dulcimer players that live close by or are coming in early for LSSDS Festival to be part of that celebration.  So if wish to be part of this celebration contact Kelly Harris at Oakdale Park, or call her at 254-897-2321.   They would love to have some dulcimers involved and it will be good advertisement for the festival.

SATURDAY MAY 8, 9, AND 10, 2015

Lone Star State Dulcimer Club will hold its festival known to most of us as “Glen Rose”.  It will start on Friday and run thru Sunday afternoon.  Dana has said that this year’s festival will start a little earlier on Friday.  There are so many entertainers it is too hard to list them all.  So check the schedule on their website  All day stage, evening concerts, square dancing, workshops and lots of jamming will be happening.  This is always a fun festival and the best part is there is no registration or fees.  So bring your lawn chairs set them up in front of the stage and enjoy some great music and the fun antics of Dana Hamilton and friends.  They do a great job on this festival, come on out and support it.

La Quinta is the motel for the festival this year.  It is located at 101 West Bo Gibbs Blvd. in Glen Rose not far from Oakdale Park.  They have blocked off rooms just for the festival.  To make reservations go to or call directly to 254-898-0686.  Tell them you are with the LSSDS festival group.  Also be sure to tell them if you’re a member of AARP.

There is a festival on June 11- 13, 2015 called “Arkala-Dulci-Fest”.  This is going to take place in Benton, Arkansas at the Congo Baptist Church.  Registration forms and more information can be found by looking up John Keane on Facebook.  John and Karen Keane, Linda Brockington, Duane Porterfield and Richard Ash will be the instructors.  This is a new venture that is mainly featuring mountain dulcimers and flutes.  If you are in the area I am sure they would appreciate your support. For more information you can e-mail or call 1-318-687-1635.

We don’t know about you but we are already thinking about summer plans.  By August you might want a break from our hot Texas summers.  Why not come out to Red River, New Mexico and join the fun on Saturday August 1, 2015 for the Red River New Mexico Dulcimer Festival???  This will be the third year for this festival put together by our own David and Annette Lindsey and sponsored by the Red River Community House.  Also featured will be Dave Para and Cathy Barton, Dana and Judy Hamilton, Irma and Scott Reeder and David Ellison as instructors.    It is held at the Community House located right in the middle of town with easy access to everything.  The location is great, surrounded by mountains, pine trees and the river running through town.  You can play inside, outside, on the front lawn or even the big porch with lots of rocking chairs to sit and “people watch”.  It’s a great day all the way around.

New this year in Red River, NM, David Lindsey (and friends) will be teaching a Mountain Dulcimer Building workshop from kits by McSpadden.  David will guide you through the building process starting on Sunday August 9th at 3:30 pm.  The classes will continue Monday through Friday  from 1-3 pm.  You do not need to be an experienced builder or have tools.  This will be furnished by David’s Dulcimers.  Fee for this class is $150.  When you’re finished you will have a quality McSpadden Sweet Sound mountain dulcimer you have built with your own hands.  It even gets better!!!  On Saturday August 15th you can take a 2 hour workshop from Annette Lindsey to help you get started learning to play.  Wow what a deal!!!

If you would like a flyer and schedule for Red River or information about camping or places to stay in Red River call or e-mail Teri Siddens at 903-293-8322 or  She has a list of accommodations and phone numbers.
