March 2015 Newsletter

March 1, 2015

Dear Friends;

The RRVDC will meet on March 21, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, 124 Evergreen in Durant Oklahoma.  Doors open around 8:45 AM for beginning classes that will begin at 9 AM for new players in both MD and HD.  If you are a beginner and would like instruction, please contact Lynda Bowers at 215-622-6394 or e-mail rrvdc.ok@gmail.com so she can ensure there is an instructor there.  General practice time and learning our new 2015 set list tunes will start at 10 AM till noon.

We will have a short business meeting promptly at noon due to some members have an afternoon obligation.  Then we will break for lunch and jam afterward.  This is a brown bag lunch or you can go out for something.  There are refrigerators and a microwave available.

Many members of the RRVDC attended the “Last Ever Winter Fest” in Irving, TX this past weekend.  It was a great festival and well attended.  Lots of workshops and mini concerts during the day.  The Friday and Saturday night concerts were top notch as always.  We want to thank Linda Lowe Thompson and her staff who worked so hard to put this all together.  She has done a fine job of leading and Winter Fest will be missed.

 A highlight of the weekend was the young people attending were encouraged to apply to the Dulcimers for David program.  David Schnaufer was a Master in playing the dulcimer and has always encouraged our youth to play. They had to write a short essay telling why they would like to learn to play the dulcimer and submit it to the committee.  Debbie Porter is part of this great team of people who put this program together.  They chose a youngster who really sparks an interest in dulcimer.  This year a young man by the name of Jonathan Earls was chosen to receive a beautiful McSpadden dulcimer for his essay.  He is the nephew of our own RRVDC member Susan Bittner.  He was thrilled and had already taken some workshops.  We will see more of him in times to come.  Congratulations Jonathan!!

Speaking of Winter Creek!!!!!    We are very excited about some projects planned for 2015.  We will have much improved workshop tents with sides for inclement weather and a couple of other improvements.  The RV (with 30 amps and water) camping registrations will open on June 1, 2015 at 9 AM by telephone.  No reservations will be taken until that date.  We will keep you updated who to call as WCR gets closer.

We also want to remind everyone that we will be having WCR “Specialty Classes” on Thursday afternoon, October 8, 2015 from 1-3 PM.  Cost is $30 per person, payable to the instructor directly.  Do not mail your money for these classes with your camping/product registrations.  Instructors will be Aubrey Atwater on MD, Linda Thomas on HD, and Ann Norris on Auto Harp.  These are very talented ladies and excellent instructors.  This is your opportunity to work with a professional musician on a personal level.   These classes are not geared for beginners, however, I believe we can benefit from any level of instruction.

Winter Creek Reunion has been added to the www.travelok.com website.  Click on the “Festivals” page and put in “Bennington” and the date in October and you will find a page for Winter Creek Reunion.  Be sure and add a comment and rate the festival.  This information goes out to hundreds of people.  We are fortunate to be included.

Also while surfing the World Wide Web check out www.everythingdulcimer.com.  It’s a great site for people who are new or have been playing for a while.  A wealth of information from discussions to for sale pages from individuals and professionals, to help pages and music tab.  It has just about everything.

Also remember if you have a piece of music and not sure of the melody, look it up on You Tube.  Most likely you will be able to find it and listen to it.  The web is a wealth of information we just have to remember to use it.
